Our chef/ photographer, Rich Callahan, is known for his sweet tooth, so who better to ask to reflect on the best desserts in Kuala Lumpur for 2023? Here’s Rich’s list:
Best Desserts in Kuala Lumpur 2023
Peaches and Cream. Monica asked me to make a list of my favourite desserts of 2023. I am cheating here with this being my number-one pick, but here it goes. The dessert trolley is my favourite of the year. Who does not love to see five to six different desserts roll up to your table? With a rotating array of sweets, no two visits are the same, so yes, I am cheating, but I will take the choice of yumminess rolled to my table. The only problem is how do you only order one?
Licky Chan. I love ice cream. You do not understand; I really love ice cream. Growing up, it was always a special treat to go and get ice cream. Now, as an adult, I can have it whenever I want, and what is more adult than boozy ice cream? Yes, boozy ice cream! The non-dairy ice cream is fabulous, and the regular dairy with creative flavours and toppings should be on everyone’s must-go-to list. PS Monica’s favourite flavour is Chocolate Concierge, plant-based with whiskey chocolate.
Crema. You had me at Italian pastries, then made fresh in-house and a whole counter just for dessert or whatever desires you need in a sweet treat. Where to start? My favourite is the Bombolini filled with Nutella. The classic cannoli was to die for, and all the tarts were excellent. My wife will not let me go here by myself.
Chez Gaston. This is an amazing French Restaurant. The food is awesome. I simply loved Chef Flo’s Apple Tarte Tatin! I loved the complex simplicity of this dessert. Pastry check, caramelised apples check, ice cream check, and the way only a French chef can put it all together, check.
LaGula. I am here for the macarons. I know how to make them, but I hate making them. I do love to eat them, and these are my favourites in KL. I can not tell a lie; I have popped in, bought six macarons, and continued with my day. If I am really not going to lie to you, I have driven down to LaGula just for some macarons.
